*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The postdoc will perform the research under the supervision of Dr. Helmer. The postdoc will collaborate with the grant PIs, who are Martin Helmer (NCSU) and Vidit Nanda (Oxford), on mathematics research and mathematics software development related to the AFSOR grant project and will be expected to teach 2 courses per year.

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Mathematics at North Carolina State University. The initial term of the appointment would be for one year, with the potential for a one year renewal, for a total of two years, pending adequate progress and continued availability of funding.

Requirements
The applicants must have a PhD in mathematics or computer science or a closely related field. We are seeking applicants with a strong background in computational algebraic geometry and/or computational algebraic topology and who are interested in, and ideally familiar with, implementing algorithms in some commonly used programming language. Familiarity with or interest in topological data analysis, real algebraic geometry, and stratified Morse theory is also an asset.

Research Responsibilities
The scholar will work with Prof. Martin Helmer (http://martin-helmer.com/) at NC State and also with Prof. Vidit Nanda (https://people.maths.ox.ac.uk/nanda/), University of Oxford, on a project funded by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). While the position is based at NC State, there will be regular opportunities to engage in research visits to the Mathematical Institute at Oxford.

The postdoc is expected to support the research activities described in the grant narrative (http://martin-helmer.com/Stratified_Invariants_Kinematic_Singularities.pdf). The overarching goal of the project is to develop and implement effective algorithms to stratify maps between real algebraic varieties and compute the homology of fibers over points under such a map.

Teaching
This position also includes some teaching responsibility in the Department of Mathematics at NC State. The amount of teaching will be no more than 2 courses per year.
