Faculty in the department hold doctoral degrees from top universities and engage in research and publication.

East Carolina University (www.ecu.edu) is a member of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, is classified as a Doctoral/Research-Intensive University, and enrolls around 28,000 students with over 5,500 pursuing graduate and professional degrees. ECU is located in Greenville, NC (pop. 95,000, with a metropolitan population of over 170,000), which lies 90 miles east of Raleigh and 80 miles from the Atlantic coast. A thriving small city and regional center for education, health, and the arts, Greenville is a great place to live, work, play, and visit. It has a cost of living more than 10 percent below the national average and boasts a vibrant uptown district with restaurants, breweries, and shopping. Greenville hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year and offers numerous recreational opportunities, including access to the Tar River, over nine miles of greenways, nearly 30 parks and recreational facilities, and a growing arts scene.

ECU values diversity and seeks to create an inclusive environment that fosters the recruitment and retention of a more diverse student body, faculty, staff, and administration. The Department of Mathematics also embraces ECU’s values around diversity and inclusion and strongly encourages applications from women, people of color, and historically underrepresented groups. As a department, we serve a wide range of students—from those fulfilling their general education requirements to graduate students in mathematics—and are committed to helping all of them reach their mathematical goals. To achieve this, the department administers and staffs several physical spaces, including a large College Algebra computer lab, to provide assistance to students. Our department is an active participant in the system-wide Math Pathways initiative (https://www.utdanacenter.org/our-work/higher-education/dana-center-mathematics-pathways) and is incorporating Learning Assistants into the classroom. ECU Department of Mathematics also provides the leadership and administrative home for North Carolina’s Early Mathematics Placement Testing Center (https://sites.ecu.edu/ncempt/).
