Job description
Are you an experienced mathematician working in pure mathematics with focus on pure analysis in the broad sense? Then you might be interested in the position of Professor in Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University. As a Professor at the Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University you will be, together with the other staff members, responsible for the formation of the future generations of mathematicians. You will be the face of the institute and the university in scientific meetings across the world and you will represent the institute within our Faculty of Science and the university at large. As such, the duties associated to this position are divided roughly as 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% administration.

In the research front you will continue to develop your research line alone or in collaboration with other scientists. You will apply for external funds alone or in consortia, supervise Ph.D, MSc and BSc students, and postdocs, and organise relevant scientific meetings at national or international level.

In the teaching front, you will teach courses at a variety of levels, ranging from first year undergraduate to advanced Master courses. Master courses are taught either at local level or as part of the national Master programme, Mastermath. You will be involved in the supervision of bachelor and Master theses as well as smaller scale projects. We encourage teaching innovation with available funds via the university to help with good ideas.

In the administration front, you will be engaged in the daily life of the Mathematical Institute. You will help shape the future of the department by taking positions of responsibility and leadership within the department, the Faculty of Science and the University.

Qualifications
You will play a committed role in all aspects of academic life. Ideally, your eligibility is exemplified by:

  • a PhD in mathematics or related discipline;
  • a collection of significant research achievements;
  • a proven track record of international publications in leading journals;
  • high potential for the acquisition of external research funds;
  • previous successful supervision of postdocs and/or PhD students and readiness for future supervision;
  • commitment towards teaching and student supervision;
  • the ability to teach in and develop teaching material for Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Mathematics, based on an in-depth understanding of current developments in the field;
  • a committed role in (inter-)national activities in scientific and/or societal communities;
  • a track record on organization of events, such as research conferences, workshops and seminars;
  • a track record on outreach activities and public engagement.

In view of our policy to improve the gender balance we strongly encourage women to apply.

About the organisation
A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major strategic themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability.

At the Faculty of Science, there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us.

The Mathematical Institute of the Department of Mathematics organises and teaches the Bachelor's curricula in Mathematics as well as the (English-taught) Master's programme in Mathematics and some service teaching in mathematics. The Institute currently comprises about 10 Full Professors, 20 further faculty members, 25 PhD candidates, 10 Postdocs, and teaches 500 students. The Institute is internationally recognised for its research in both pure and applied mathematics. It houses the Utrecht Geometry Centre

 and maintains a long-standing tradition of transdisciplinary collaboration with other scientific fields including, among others, atmosphere/ocean sciences, computational life sciences, mathematical biology, medical and seismic imaging and theoretical physics. We participate in university focus areas in Complex Systems and Applied Data Science.
