Applications are sought from candidates who have: 1) a commitment to engaged student learning in undergraduate mathematics education, including the use of inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices; 2) experience teaching introductory mathematics lecture courses; 3) a willingness and experience to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to reform and sustain aspects of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum; and 4) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely related field by the starting date to be qualified for the position.

The Assistant Professor of Instruction will largely contribute to instruction in introductory mathematics courses. They may also contribute to other courses as needed or desired. Often the Assistant Professor of Instruction will work in a team setting with several instructors contributing to a single course. In addition to teaching lecture portions of courses, instructional track faculty also supervise graduate teaching assistants assigned to these classes, develop new curricula, and engage in other professional activities and services. The department has a history of strong collaboration with campus partners such as the Center for Teaching, the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, and the Office of Academic Success and Retention to support the incorporation of research-supported instructional practices such as learning assistants and the development of tools such as the Elements of Success dashboard.

Education Requirement: • Candidates must hold a PhD in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment.

Desired Qualifications: • Experience facilitating engaged student learning and using inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices. • Experience preparing and supervising teaching assistants assigned to a course. • Experience coordinating or team-teaching courses with other instructors. • Experience teaching large lecture courses. • Experience (re)designing college or university mathematics courses. • Experience recruiting and mentoring undergraduate math majors. • Experience working with college or university partners to help students with transition to university coursework.
