Université Côte d'Azur, Mathematics

Position ID: 3026-MATHNEURO [#24534]
Position Title: Post-doctoral position in numerical analysis for neurosciences
Position Type: Non tenure-track faculty
Position Location: Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur 06100, France [map] sort by distance
Application Deadline: (posted 2024/04/10, listed until 2024/10/10)
Position Description:

The mathematics laboratory Jean-Alexandre Dieudonné, at Université Côte d’Azur, is seeking candidates for a post-doctoral position in numerical analysis, funded by the ANR project SINNAPS, whose PIs are C. Guerrier and S. Krell. The duration of the contract is 12 months renewable.

Level of qualification required: PhD or equivalent. The PhD must have been defended when the position starts.

Context: The project's goal is to investigate the summation of inputs in neuronal cells, particularly in the complex geometry of the dendritic tree. The input dynamics, corresponding to ionic transients, are modeled using the Poisson-Nernst Planck (PNP) system of equation, and solved using the Discrete Duality Finite Volume (DDFV) method.

Assignment: The post-doctoral fellow will implement a coupling of the Poisson and Nernst-Planck equations, within the DDFV framework, preserving the positivity of ionic concentrations, and in multi-domains representing the interior, the membrane and the exterior of the neuronal cell. Will follow the analysis of the numerical scheme (existence, positivity, convergence). The recruited person will work both on theoretical aspect and on implementation. Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment is a plus. This work is part of a bigger project including collaborations with a group of experimental biology. Depending on the post-doctoral fellow interests, work closer to experimental data could be considered. The work will take place in the LJAD, the mathematics research unit at Universite Cote d’Azur, in downtown Nice.

Keywords: DDFV, PNP, neurosciences.

About the LJAD: Located in downtown Nice, the LJAD is one of the biggest mathematics laboratory in France, with more than 110 permanent researchers, covering all fields of mathematics. The laboratory has five teams: PDE and Numerical Analysis, Algebra and Topology, Probability and Statistics, Modeling in Mechanics, and Interaction with other sciences, with whom the candidate will be able to interact.

Technical skills and level required: We are seeking applicants with a strong computer programming background and research experience in numerical analysis of PDEs. Some key topics of interest include, but are not limited to, finite volume methods, nonlinear system resolution, implementation, fixed point theory, a priori estimates, compactness. Interest in problems coming from biology is a plus.

Languages: French or English

Remuneration: Monthly gross salary around 2700 euros, including health and welfare insurance. No teaching duties are required (there might be possibilities to teach, additionally). Additional fundings for traveling are available.

Start date: September 1st 2024, with flexibility.

Instruction to apply: Please send your resume with complete list of publication, research statement, cover letter and letters of recommendation to Stella Krell: krell@unice.fr, and Claire Guerrier: claire.guerrier@univ-cotedazur.fr
