The Pasadena Unified School District is seeking a full-time instructor for a radically accelerated middle- and high-school mathematics program, with teaching responsibilities beginning in August 2018. Salary and benefits are competitive.

The Math Academy Program

The Math Academy is an ambitious effort to radically accelerate the learning curve of the district's mathematically gifted students with the aim of setting a new standard in mathematics education. Students will complete the entirety of the standard high-school curriculum (including calculus) by 8th-grade in addition to mastering the essential techniques of proof-based mathematics. The high school years will then be devoted to pursuing all corners of undergraduate-level pure and applied mathematics with a particular focus on individual research projects. The goal of Math Academy is to develop students with the passion, skills, and insight to excel in the honors programs of the most elite universities in the world.

What Makes This Opportunity Special

As our second Ph.D. instructor, you'll play a critical role in shaping a world-class mathematics program from the ground up. You'll teach gifted and motivated students who are interested in learning mathematics because it's fun and challenging and not because it's a degree requirement. You'll teach classes in everything from trigonometry and calculus to abstract algebra and complex analysis. On top of that, you'll get to know your students on a personal level as you'll teach them on and off over a period of years with an average class size of only between 12 and 16.

Qualified Candidates

Qualified candidates will possess a Ph.D. in mathematics and have a successful track record of undergraduate teaching. Preferred candidates will have mentored undergraduate- or graduate-level research and will have the ability to challenge and inspire their students. Enthusiasm, creativity, dedication, patience and strong communication skills are characteristics of an exceptional candidate.

Job Responsibilities

The candidate will teach classes, develop curriculum and participate in the design of the academic program. A candidate without a California teaching credential will be required to enroll in an expedited, online credentialing program and pass relevant state credentialing tests.
