The Mathematics Specialist at GEMS will lead the faculty in deepening and enriching students’ mathematical understanding and fluency, work closely with teachers to review and implement a Mathematics curriculum based on Singapore Math for grades Pre K-9. The successful candidate will be experienced with designing and providing instruction to meet the needs of a diverse learning community. She/He will support and coach teachers as they work with learners through lesson modeling, direct instruction for students, identifying and facilitating professional learning opportunities for teachers, and establishing paths of communication with colleagues and parents. The Mathematics Specialist will lead Math Clubs and provide opportunities for GEMS students to engage in mathematics experiences and competitions beyond the school building. The Mathematics Specialist may also teach one or more classes at the secondary level based on the needs of students.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

• Minimum of seven years’ experience • An advanced degree with a focus on mathematics and/or mathematics teaching at the graduate or undergraduate level • Experience in Independent schools • Experience mentoring, coaching, and/or designing and leading professional development for teachers • Familiarity with a wide range of teaching approaches and strategies • An understanding of differentiated learning • An understanding of the math learning continuum from PK-5 • An understanding of child development including experience with elementary-aged students • An understanding of the importance of a partnership with families and their involvement in and support of the program • Skilled in the integration of technology
