The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £36,208 - £37,008 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work with Professor Gavin Esler on the project NERC funded project Planetary and Gravity Waves as Drivers of Sudden Stratospheric Warmings (PEGASUS, NE/S00985X/1). The project focuses on understanding the underlying fluid dynamics of, and consequently the statistical behaviour of, sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs). SSWs are periods of rapid heating observed in the polar stratosphere in some winter seasons, they have a significant impact on surface climate and polar ozone chemistry, and the quality of their representation in climate models is highly variable.

The responsibilities of the post will include, carrying out vigorous, high-level research in the area of geophysical fluid dynamics and atmospheric science, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals; participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences.

The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

This post is available from 1st June 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter and it is funded by NERC for 13 months in the first instance.

The successful candidates should have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics, physics, or a closely related field (e.g. oceanography) should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date. They will have a proven track record in research and publishing, excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate participation in a research group and excellent communication skills, both written and oral. They will also have a strong desire to work at the heart of, and fully participate in, an active research group in the field.

Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 26 (salary £33,257 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

An outstanding candidate will have proven experience with numerical modelling, preferably applied to geophysical fluid dynamics and research experience in geophysical fluid dynamics, oceanography or atmospheric science, or in a closely related field.
