Department of Mathematical Sciences
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy, New York

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in applied mathematics to begin in Fall 2018.  The position is associated with our research program in physical oceanography.  Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in mathematics, physics or physical oceanography (or in a related discipline), or be a graduate student who will complete such a Ph.D. before taking up the position.

The focus of our research program is to further develop the theory of internal waves in the ocean and to describe spectral energy transfers between internal waves and the interactions of internal waves with large-scale vortices and flows.  Candidates are sought who possess an understanding of wave interactions and turbulence, have the ability to contribute to the theory of internal waves in the ocean, desire to work on numerical aspects of the research program, and to assist in integrating the theory and oceanographic observations.  Of particular interest are theory and models based on the wave turbulence and ray tracing (WKBJ) paradigms.

The Postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Prof. Yuri Lvov and will closely interact with Dr. Kurt Polzin from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  Subject to availability of funds, academic and summer support is available for an initial period of two years with the possibility of support for additional years.  Travel support to attend conferences will also be provided, along with the generous Rensselaer benefit packet.

Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vita, a research statement, and three letters of recommendation to MathJobs.Org.  Inquiries should be sent to

Evaluation of applications will be ongoing until the position is filled.  Selection for the position will begin on December 1, 2017.

The Department welcomes candidates who will bring diverse intellectual, geographical, gender and ethnic perspectives to Rensselaer's work and campus communities.
