The Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group (MGGG) seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position (initial appointment of one year, renewable for an additional year). The position will be supervised by Justin Solomon (MIT) and Moon Duchin (Tufts). Our working group studies the mathematical and computational elements of the redistricting problem, with an emphasis on detecting gerrymandering. The position has no teaching requirements, but it will be possible to propose a course to teach.

Desirable areas of expertise or exposure:

  • Markov chain Monte Carlo and other algorithmic sampling methods
  • Combinatorics: Graph or network analysis
  • Geometry, such as metric geometry, differential geometry, comparison geometry, geometric group theory, topology
  • Computational geometry
  • Large datasets, especially census and electoral data, including statistical analysis or machine learning
  • Social science, such as urban studies, political economy, geography, demography, policy, law, political science
  • Experience with community and civil rights organizations
  • Programming languages: Python, R, Matlab, etc.
  • Experience with GIS software and shapefiles
