Job Description: Description of Duties:

SUNY Polytechnic Institute's College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics and Physics invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Physics. The successful applicant will engage in scholarly research involving undergraduate students and support our Physics program, including a Physics minor and courses offered to students in Engineering and Technology disciplines. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for a Wolfspeed Endowed Chair position, which can be found on the Academic section of our Employment Opportunities.

We are eager to hear from candidates with demonstrated commitments both teaching and research, and a commitment to cultivating diversity in the university and professional work environment.

The area of research is open. We are especially interested in applicants with an active research program from all areas of theoretical and/or computational physics, particularly Gravitation and Astrophysics. Teaching responsibilities will include our most foundational offerings in lower-division and upper division physics courses and labs.

Specific duties, in addition to maintaining an active research program involving undergraduate students, will include teaching three physics courses and/or labs per semester (3 or 4 credits each). During the first two years of the appointment, a reduced teaching load to include two classes per semester can be anticipated, providing an opportunity to establish a research program and develop courses. Faculty also may use funds from externally-sponsored research programs to reduce their teaching loads.

Other responsibilities include contributing to the assessment and continued development of Physics courses, and contributing to the University community through committee service and other activities.

Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. (ABD Considered) in Physics from a college or university accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized organization.

Applications received by December 3, 2021 are assured full consideration, but the search will continue until the position is filled. Only complete applications will be considered. Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter or statement describing the applicant's teaching philosophy, with a focus on teaching undergraduate students, and past contributions and plans for promoting diversity and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service, and a list of three references. In addition, applicants should include in their statement a description of current and future research interests, including a discussion of opportunities to develop or continue externally funded research.

Applicants for Associate or Full professor with well-established research programs should include in their cover letters a statement on their current program and describe how they would shift their program to SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Applicants for Associate or Full professor with interests in academic administration, including potential appointment as department chair, should include a statement detailing their interest and experiences in academic leadership and curriculum development and assessment.

SUNY Poly supports efforts to increase diversity, inclusion, and the participation and advancement of women and underrepresented individuals in STEM. Women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must address in their applications their abilities to work with a culturally diverse population. This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual background checks.
