The Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and a long tradition of excellence in undergraduate education. The Department has a strong research focus, and a strong commitment to teaching, service and outreach. The PhD, MS and BS enrollments are on the rise, with the goal of growing these programs significantly over the next several years. Collaborations with UAB’s medical enterprise are strong and growing, with many opportunities for faculty to participate in interdisciplinary work. Our undergraduate program, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, consists of about 150 undergraduate majors and offers students the ability to earn a BS in Mathematics in one of four tracks: Mathematics (Traditional) Track, Mathematical Reasoning Track, Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation Track and Mathematics with Honors. The Department also offers a popular Fast Track option (B.S./M.S. in four years). Undergraduate students receive training in all fields of pure and applied mathematics as part of their core education. Graduates of these programs are successful in industry, academia, and government. University Hall, which houses the department, contains state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture spaces, computer labs, and other facilities.
