As part of the project "Algebraic spline geometry: towards algorithmic shape representation" (funded by the EPSRC grant EP/V012835/1), we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in close collaboration with Dr Nelly Villamizar. The overarching aim of the project is to develop research at the interface between algebraic geometry, combinatorics, and splines leading to novel approximation methods for representing shapes with complex topology.

Over the last 30 years Swansea University has been at the forefront of international research in the area of computational engineering. Having pioneered the development of the Finite Element Method, this world-leading expertise is maintained through the Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering and the recently created Computational Foundry, a £32.5 million world-class facility and a beacon to pursue a transformative research agenda in Mathematics and Computer Science. Backed by £17m from the European Regional Development Fund, it drives research at the interface between computational and mathematical sciences, making Wales a global destination for computational scientists and industrial partners. Moreover, the EPSRC (2019-2023) Centre for Doctoral Training in Enhancing Human Interactions and Collaborations with Data and Intelligence Driven Systems is based within the Computational Foundry.

The Department of Mathematics holds a Bronze Athena SWAN Award, and we are one of only 18 universities across the UK, and the only one in Wales, to hold a University-level Athena SWAN Silver award. Main duties include:

- To work in the development of an integrated approach to mathematical questions lying at the heart of spline approximation by using methods stemming from algebra, geometry, topology, and combinatorics.

- Play an active role in research activities in the scope of the project.

- Prepare reports and papers describing the results of the research, both confidential and for publication. The appointee is expected to be actively engaged in the writing and publishing of research papers, particularly those intended for publication in refereed (e.g., international) journals or comparable as a normal part of their role.

Essential criteria:

- A PhD degree in mathematics, computer science or a related area or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience.

- The applicant should have research experience in a field closely related to applied algebra and geometry, as well as experience in writing high quality research papers.

- Evidence of active engagement, personal role, and contribution to writing and publishing research papers, particularly for refereed journals.

The position is for 2 years and it is available from September 1st, 2021.
