The position

UiT - The Arctic University of Norway is looking to fill a permanent position as an associate professor in pure mathematics within the field of Algebra and its applications. We are particularly interested in strengthening the research activities within the Lie-Størmer Center for Fundamental Structures in Computational and Pure Mathematics which will unite and advance the research frontiers in computational and pure mathematics by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern computational problems. Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate connections to the current research activities in the Algebra group and the Lie-Størmer Center. The successful candidate will join the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and will be associated to the Algebra group.

We will consider both experienced researchers and up-and-coming candidates in earlier stages of their careers, and the evaluation of the applicants will be on the potential of the candidates to contribute to the creation of a leading research group in the field of Algebra and its applications. The department is particularly committed to increase the proportion of women in senior research positions. We therefore especially encourage female candidates to apply.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading research department in algebra, differential geometry, complex systems modeling, and climate science. It provides education at the bachelor, master, and Ph.D. levels. Around 40 people are employed in the department, out of which 17 are permanent faculty-staff, 2 are administrative personal and further several Ph.D. students and postdocs. The Lie Størmer Center is a proposed Center of Excellence within the second phase of Norwegian Centre of Excellence scheme (SFF V) to start in 2023. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time, within 6 months after receiving the offer.

The position’s field of research

The applicant should be qualified to contribute to research-based teaching in pure mathematics and supervision in cooperation with the existing staff at the department to create an excellent learning environment. She or he should further be willing to initiate and take part in national and international research projects and work actively to receive research grants. We are especially encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and interactions and we are interested in candidates able to contribute also to courses in the interplay of mathematics and computer science. Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate that can support our efforts to build an internationally recognized group in Applied Algebra. You must hold a PhD in mathematics and should have research and teaching experience after your PhD.

You must be fluent in English. Asides from teaching classes in English, you should be able to teach also classes in Norwegian after 2 years.

During the assessment, emphasis will be on your potential for research, motivation and personal suitability for the position. 

Qualification requirements for the position as Associate Professor:

  • Norwegian doctoral degree in subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality
  • Documented pedagogical competence
At UiT we put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

UiT wishes to increase the proportion of females in academic positions. In cases where two or more applicants are found to be approximately equally qualified, female applicants will be given priority.

Pedagogical competence (basic pedagogical competence)

All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their pedagogical competence.   

You must have acquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at higher education level. This includes basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance.  

Documentation requirement 

a) Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course. 

b) Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor. The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio. 

If the pedagogical competence can be acquired within two years of appointment, applicants shall not be ranked based on pedagogical competence.   

Those who do not satisfy the requirements may be appointed on a permanent basis on the condition that they satisfy the requirements within two years of appointment.

Work- og salary conditions 
The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of the discipline, their department and the university as a whole.

The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, Associate Professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work after time spent on other duties has been deducted. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff. 

The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011.  A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. In addition to the salary, UiT pays approximately 12.35 % directly to the Pension Fund.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailde description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things, aim to clarify the applicants personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
