A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology. 

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of two years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution. 

The Faculty of Science and Technology consists of the following departments: Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Science, Department of Engineering and Safety, Department of Geology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and Department of Physics and Technology. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a leading research department in algebraic geometry, differential geometry, complex systems modeling, and climate science. It provides education at the bachelor, master, and Ph.D. levels. Around 50 people are employed in the department, at the moment there are 21 PhD positions and 3 postdoctoral positions at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. 

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. 

The position will be attached to the project “UiT Aurora Center for Mathematical Structures in Computations” (MASCOT) funded by the UiT Aurora Centers initiative. The MASCOT project aims to unify and advance research frontiers in the interplay of computational and pure mathematics by exploring fundamental mathematical structures and their increasing significance for modern algorithms and novel program architectures. The research topics for this postdoc position are in the borderland between differential geometry and differential equations, non-commutative algebra, computational mathematics and numerical analysis. Central topics are structure preserving geometric integration algorithms for differential equations, differential geometry in applications, as well as the study of algebraic structures arising from analysis of geometric integration algorithms, such as pre- and post-Lie algebras, Lie- and Butcher series and related combinatorial Hopf algebras. Possible application areas include stochastic and deterministic dynamical systems, rough paths and regularity structures, control theory, and robotics. The development of high quality mathematical software is a prioritized task. We primarily seek candidates with strong background in one or several of the following topics: algebra and combinatorics, geometric numerical integration, stochastic DEs and PDEs, rough paths and regularity structures, applied differential geometry, foundational aspects of computational mathematics. 

For appointment as Postdoctoral Fellow, the applicant is required to have a Norwegian doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must document this and submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position. 

Applicants must submit a 2-page project proposal for the qualifying work, which should be explicitly related to the activity within the project. This proposal shall include a progress plan. It is required that the applicant will be able to complete the project during the period of appointment.

The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. In the assessment the main emphasis will be attached to the submitted works and the project proposal. Emphasis shall also be attached to experience from popularization/dissemination and academic policy and administrative activity. 

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
