The Department of Mathematics at the University of North Dakota seeks an Assistant Professor in statistics. This is a 9-month tenure track position contingent on availability of funding.

The Mathematics Department is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences and currently offers a BS in Mathematics, MS and MEd in Mathematics, and MS in Applied Statistics.

Duties & Responsibilities The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 60% teaching; 30% research; 10% service effort. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics with an emphasis on applications Collaborate with statisticians in the department to develop courses for the MS program in Applied Statistics Advise and mentor undergraduate students with interests in statistics Advise graduate students in their independent studies/internships Establish a solid and productive research program with emphasis on an area of statistics with applications suited to one or more of UND’s Grand Challenges (see https://und.edu/research/grand-challenges/) Required Competencies Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department of Mathematics Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery Minimum Requirements Earned PhD in Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics (with emphasis in Statistics), or Data Science (with emphasis in statistics) by August 15, 2023 Successful completion of criminal history records check. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level Experience teaching statistics with a focus on data analysis and data science applications Evidence of research potential such as a record of peer-reviewed publications in quality journals Research interests aligned with UND’s Grand Challenges Experience mentoring students in industrial internships and supervising student projects/independent studies Minimum Hiring Salary Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Contract Period/Start Date Position is full-time, benefitted and exempt. Initial contract extends from August 16, 2023 to May 15, 2024. Summer teaching may be available but is neither guaranteed nor required.
