University of Kansas Medical Center, Radiation Oncology

The University of Kansas Health System is a world-class academic medical center and destination for complex care and diagnosis. We offer more options for patients with serious conditions because of our expertise and leadership in medical research and education. Our physicians are researchers and educators expanding the boundaries of medical knowledge. Their major breakthroughs lead to life-changing treatments and technologies of the future. In 1998, the Kansas Legislature created The University of Kansas Hospital as an independent authority. Since then, the hospital has gone from facing enormous challenges to being recognized as one of the nation's top academic medical centers. In 2016, the hospital integrated with The University of Kansas Physicians to become The University of Kansas Health System, expanding our ability to provide the best care to even more patients across our region and beyond. Today the health system includes more than 100 locations, more than 12,500 employees and more than 1,000 physicians. In addition, our Care Collaborative helps extend the reach of academic medicine to dozens of hospitals and providers across the region. The Department of Radiation Oncology provides a full range of clinical services at the University of Kansas Health System and five area community facilities with over 3,500 treatment courses annually. UKHS clinics are equipped with a total of nine Varian linear accelerators, one Tomotherapy, Big Bore CT scanners, PET scanners, IntraBeam and Calypso systems. Four (4) new Varian Truebeam treatment units will be installed in UKHS sites in the next two years’ timeframe. In addition, an IBA Proteus One with pencil beam scanning and CBCT capabilities is currently being installed and will go clinical in Mid 2022. The Division of Medical Physics is growing to 16 medical physics positions and 12 medical dosimetrists who support a full range of clinical, research, and educational services.
