SUMMARY 
The Special Projects Officer for BEGIN (SPOB) works under the supervision of the Director of the MPS Department (DMPSD) and in collaboration with internal and external constituents to create closer ties with academic institutions and business, entrepreneurial, government labs and agencies, industry, and non-profit (BEGIN) entities. The SPOB will plan, carry out, assess, and build attitudinal and financial support to increase the AMS’s portfolio of projects supporting students and mathematical scientists beyond the academy. The goal is to directly impact the profession to make it more welcoming and inclusive for mathematical careers in non-academic settings. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Develop, grow, and leverage relationships with BEGIN entities and others beyond the academy where mathematically-trained people can flourish in careers. 
  • Develop information, resources, activities, and programming that AMS can provide to help enable graduate students and undergraduates in their preparations for a range of career directions. 
  • Develop strategic relationships and work with graduate programs to help them develop culture and practice that support graduate students’ knowledge about and preparation for careers in BEGIN areas. 
  • Develop, market, and sustain AMS services, activities, and strategy targeting BEGIN entities, academic departments, and students. 
  •  Build a sponsorship model to support BEGIN activities beyond the initial investments. This includes identifying funding opportunities, writing and submitting proposals and prospectuses, etc. 
  • Serve as a committee liaison as assigned
WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY IF YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING: 
  • Earned doctorate in one of the mathematical sciences or related area 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Familiarity with the mathematical community 
  • Strong interest in and experience relevant to career development for mathematical scientists or people in related STEM areas 
  • Familiarity with various types of undergraduate and graduate programs in the mathematical sciences. 
  • Ability and willingness to develop and sustain interactions with mathematicians and others working in BEGIN areas 
  • Ability to address issues constructively and build cooperative relationships within and across AMS departments as well as outside of the organization with societies, institutes, associations, programs, and funding agencies 
WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS: 
  • Extended work hours may be required to meet project deadlines or resolve unexpected problems 
  • Work at sites outside the Providence office may be required for the completion of certain tasks, projects, or processes. 
  • This position is required to be in-office with hybrid potential
