Position and Qualifications

The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science is anchored by an actively engaged faculty and supports students interested in obtaining degrees in Mathematics (B.A., B.S., or minor) with optional minors/concentrations in Data Science. Beyond the core curriculum, we offer an array of special topics courses in a variety of subfields of mathematics, statistics, computer science, and data science. In addition, faculty work closely with students to explore and develop research projects culminating in a capstone experience.

We seek an individual with expertise in any field of mathematics. The applicant should possess a strong interest in teaching excellence and innovation within a liberal arts institution focused on educating women. We welcome applicants with a Ph.D. (or who are ABD, completed by July 1, 2024) in areas focused on mathematics, applied mathematics, or other related disciplines.

The position carries a teaching load equivalent to six courses per year. The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory and upper-level courses in mathematics. They will have the opportunity to develop special topics courses and will contribute courses to the general education program. Other duties include supervising capstone projects and participating in departmental governance.

We seek candidates who will advance Hollins’ commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusive excellence; who have demonstrated success working with and mentoring students who are first-generation, limited-income, and from historically underrepresented groups in higher education; and who have an active record of ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations.

About Hollins Known for its creative and highly engaged student body, Hollins University prides itself on its nationally-recognized and award-winning undergraduate and graduate academic programs, its deeply committed alumnae/i network, its extraordinarily beautiful campus surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its unique ability to ensure that each of its students has the opportunity to design a transformational college experience. • Two letters of recommendation (at least one of which must focus specifically on the candidate’s teaching experience and abilities).

Applicants should submit materials to mathsearch@hollins.edu. The selected candidate will be asked to submit official transcripts to the Office of the Provost, and once they accept a contingent employment offer, a criminal history background check will be conducted.
