University of Texas at El Paso, Mathematical Sciences
Position Description
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, funded by the DOE Energy Earthshots project titled “Advanced Multi-Physics Machine Learning for Subsurface Energy Systems Across Scales.”
Project Description:
The project aims to build computational models that enhance our understanding of physical, geomechanical, and geochemical processes occurring at multiple scales in subsurface energy storage and recovery systems. An interdisciplinary team, including experts from UTEP, Florida State University, the University of Utah, Sandia National Lab, and Alma Energy LLC, will collaborate, integrating expertise from applied mathematics, data science, geoscience, and engineering.
Responsibilities:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will join Dr. Son-Young Yi’s research group at UTEP, contributing to the development of numerical models for enhanced geothermal systems and geologic carbon storage. The successful candidate will also work closely with scientists from partner institutions and mentor graduate students involved in the project.
Required and preferred qualifications:
We seek candidate with a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational science, or a closely related field with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Finite element methods for partial differential equations
- Multiscale numerical methods
- Flow and transport in porous media
- Scientific machine learning
- Excellent programming skills in Python and C++ and prior experience with High Performance Computing
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Appointment terms and Benefits:
The earliest start date of this position is June 2025. The initial appointment will be for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, contingent on performance, mutual agreement, and funding availability. The annual salary is $60,000/year. This is a research-focused position with no formal teaching responsibilities; however, teaching opportunities may be available in the Department of Mathematical Sciences during the second year. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will receive health insurance, benefits, and access to professional development opportunities.
