Position Description:

PhD position (6 years) at University of Dubrovnik, within Conduction (Optimal control and model reduction for evolution and data driven problems) project and aligned with the European COST Action CA24136 - Interactions between Control Theory and Machine Learning (InterCoML).

Starting Date: Negotiable, with a preference on February 1, 2026.

Salary (gross): approx. 2.300€ per month. The expenses of the doctoral study will be also covered by the project.

Responsibilities: The candidate is suppose to enroll and successfully complete a doctoral study program in mathematics. The candidate will work on problems related to the Work packages 1 and 2 (Optimal control problems for evolution systems. Spectral analysis of Gramian operators, Lyapunov and Riccati equation) of the project. Special attention will be given to interactions among control theory and machine learning. He/she will be expected to work effectively within the project team, to have the ability to develop and apply new concepts, to write numerical codes and run the simulations, as well as to write clearly and concisely for publication.

Required qualifications:

· completed master study in applied mathematics or a related field,

· fulfils the requirements for admission to a doctoral study program in mathematics,

· good knowledge of English (oral/written),

· a candidate who already holds PhD cannot apply for the position,

Additional preferences will be given to candidates:

· with experience in Control Theory, Machine Learning, Partial Differential Equations, Functional Analysis and/or Numerical Analysis,

· with experience in programming (Python and/or MATLAB),

· with a successful research record.
