Position Description

In the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science at the Mathematics of Data Science Group at the Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) is a vacancy for a

PhD Position (f/m/d)

to promote their own academic qualifications within the meaning of Section 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) as soon as possible.

Your tasks

Your job tasks include:

- You are primarily engaged in mathematical research and algorithmic development, working within the group on topics such as data assimilation, machine learning, and causal inference in application areas like climate science and biomedical challenges.

- You publish your results in renowned journals, such as one of the SIAM Journals, and aim to complete your PhD within the fixed-term employment period.

- You contribute to teaching within the department at the Institute of Mathematics, amounting to three semester hours per week, particularly in the new Bachelor's and Master's programs in Data Science as well as in the Data Science Lab.

- You support the supervision of theses and actively participate in academic self-governance.

- You present your results at national and international meetings, conferences, or workshops, and undertake short stays (1–6 months) with collaboration partners abroad.

Your profile

For being part of the selection process is needed:

- A completed university degree (Master/ Diploma (Univ.)) in mathematics, computer science with a mathematical focus, or a related field at the time of appointment.

- Solid knowledge in the field of data assimilation, particularly in particle filtering, as well as in data science, machine learning, and statistics, demonstrated through excellent theses or successfully completed courses in these areas.

Following competences are desirable:

- Good knowledge in the areas of Mathematics of Data Science relevant to research and teaching. - Excellent written and spoken proficiency in English. - Very good to good programming skills, especially in Python and MATLAB. - Commitment, enthusiasm, an independent working style, initiative, and strong teamwork skills.
