About the Program in Computing for the Arts and Sciences – The Program in Computing for the Arts and Sciences (PCAS) is a novel interdisciplinary program in computing education developed specifically to meet the wide range of needs of undergraduate students in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). PCAS is coordinating and expanding the teaching of computational methods and digital studies across the arts and sciences. We are working toward a future in which every LSA student feels confident in their abilities to understand, critique, design, and employ computational methods and digital tools both effectively and critically. Our classes are organized around the themes of computing for discovery, expression, and justice.

About COMPFOR courses -- COMPFOR is short for COMPuting FOR. COMPFOR courses prepare students to understand and use computing in their studies in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Sections would likely be from one of these four courses in our expression and justice themes. COMPFOR 111 introduces programming and computing’s impact on social justice in a scaffolded process of using teaspoon languages, writing programs in the Snap! programming language (https://snap.berkeley.edu/), and learning to transfer their knowledge to industry standard notations like Python, Processing, and HTML. COMPFOR 121 introduces programming in the context of creative expression. Students build image and sound filters, drawing programs, interactive Web pages, chatbots, and side-scroller video games using Snap!. COMPFOR 221 explores digital media in Python where students generate and manipulate images, sounds, and video. COMPFOR 250 introduces students from across LSA to artificial intelligence and how large language models (LLMs) work. Students create image and gesture recognizers, chatbots based on both procedural rules and learning from a text corpus, and build classifiers with neural networks with scaffolded tools and programming environments.

Responsibilities* Teach three sections of introductory courses in a studio-style 90-minute combined lecture and lab session twice per week, hold office hours, and supervise GSIs and instructional assistants for the courses.

Required Qualifications* The successful candidate will have a graduate degree in any field in the liberal arts or sciences, computer science or information, or STEM education, and an extensive background in computing and programming for liberal arts and sciences. Teaching experience at the college/university level is required. Applicants will be selected based upon demonstrated subject matter expertise, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and program needs.

Desired Qualifications* At least two years of experience teaching courses involving computing at college/university level is preferred.
