The University of Oxford intends to appoint to the Wallis Professorship of Mathematics from 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Wallis Professorship is a premier appointment, one of a number of Statutory Professorships currently held at the Mathematical Institute. Established in 1969 in honour of John Wallis, who held the title of Savilian Professor of Geometry (1649-1703), it is a cornerstone of Oxford’s commitment to research in fundamental mathematics. The post is associated with a Professorial Fellowship at St Anne’s College.

The University seeks a scholar of the highest international calibre, who holds an outstanding record of research in some field of analysis and probability, very broadly understood. The post-holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the long-term development of the field of analysis and probability at Oxford by providing research leadership within the Department. The Wallis Professor will also engage in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the Mathematical Institute, and play a major role in the supervision, guidance and examination of graduate students.

You should have a proven record of original research of the highest quality in analysis or probability and of securing research funding, with an excellent publication record and a demonstrable ability to provide research leadership and direction. You should be able to provide effective and innovative teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, to direct postdoctoral researchers and to communicate effectively with a wide range of colleagues within the Department, College and wider University.

If you would like to discuss this post in more detail, please contact Professor Mike Giles, Head of the Mathematical Institute, at head-of-dept@maths.ox.ac.uk, or Professor Ben Green at ben.green@maths.ox.ac.uk. All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.

We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from women, from disabled people and from people of Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type at Oxford.
