The position of Clinical Faculty was introduced at St. Thomas to provide support for unique programmatic needs. In order to satisfy requirements necessary to maintain our CAE status, the clinical designation allows flexibility not available for a tenure-track position while providing clear benchmarks for job security.

We envision two possible types of clinical faculty appointments. Typically, a memorandum of understanding for one position might include: 

• A 2/2 teaching load per academic year that often consists of one preparation per semester. 

• A significant expectation for research leading to publications supporting the program’s CAE designation. Typically, we expect the program group to publish on average at least one paper per year in an CAE-approved journal.

• An expectation of mentoring actuarial science majors, including professional exam preparation.

• The University provides support for assisting faculty in obtaining an associate credential. 

For the other position type, we envision an industry-experienced actuary who will assume the role of director of the program. Duties for this position include:

• A 2/2 teaching load per academic year that often consists of one preparation per semester.

• Continued outreach to strengthen industry ties to enhance opportunities for students in the program.

• An expectation of mentoring actuarial science majors, including professional exam preparation.

• Maintain the close existing relationship between the program and its alumni.

• Provide oversight and support for the Risk Management and Insurance Program.

• Leads curricular assessment and enhancement efforts.

• Chairs the program’s External Advisory Board. 

 For both positions, the Faculty Handbook stipulates that after the completion of three successful one-year contracts, the position is eligible for ongoing three-year renewals. Success is defined by satisfaction of the terms outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding created at the time of hiring. 

The successful candidate will teach primarily actuarial science classes and occasionally teach mathematics and statistics courses. Typically, the Director of the Actuarial Science Program works closely with the Chair of the Department of Mathematics to address scheduling needs. Enrollment in actuarial science and upper-level statistics classes is commonly about 15-22 students and lower-level mathematics courses are capped at 28 to 30 students. The Faculty Development Center at the University of St. Thomas maintains a competitive research support program that can provide faculty members up to two course releases during their first five years on campus.
