The Department of Mathematics at the University of St. Thomas invites applications for clinical faculty positions in Actuarial Science, to begin in September 2022. Applicants must have or be near completion of a Ph.D. (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in actuarial science or in a closely related field with emphasis in financial mathematics or statistics. ABDs nearing completion of the Ph.D. will be considered. Alternatively, a candidate who can potentially serve as Director of the program is required to have the Fellow designation from a professional actuarial society and at least five years of industry experience. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and show strong potential for productive research/scholarly activities in actuarial science or a closely related field. The Actuarial Science Program is one of just 17 universities in the United States recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The University strongly prefers candidates who can contribute to the CAE requirements of this designation and leverage the unique industry ties the program enjoys to provide a singular experience for our students.

The University of St. Thomas is a liberal arts institution that values excellence in teaching and research. The 20-member Department of Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/mathematics) offers bachelor's programs in mathematics, mathematics education, and actuarial science, and supports the interdepartmental degree program in statistics and is quite active in undergraduate research. The Actuarial Science Program (http://www.stthomas.edu/actuarialscience) offers a Bachelor of Science degree and is in the Department of Mathematics. The Center for Applied Mathematics (http://www.stthomas.edu/cam) is located within the department and supports faculty and student research on a variety of projects.

The University of St. Thomas embraces diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all. Our convictions of dignity, diversity and personal attention call us to embody and champion a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.  We welcome applicants of diverse races, ethnicities, geographic origins, gender identities, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, work experience, physical and intellectual abilities, and financial means. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. This commitment is consistent with our university mission: Inspired by Catholic intellectual tradition the University of St. Thomas educates students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good. A successful candidate will possess a commitment to the ideals of this mission. The Department of Mathematics is in full support of these ideals and strives to create a department that embodies them.

The position of Clinical Faculty was introduced at St. Thomas to provide support for unique programmatic needs. In order to satisfy requirements necessary to maintain our CAE status, the clinical designation allows flexibility not available for a tenure-track position while providing clear benchmarks for job security.

We envision two possible types of clinical faculty appointments. Typically, a memorandum of understanding for one position might include:

• A 2/2 teaching load per academic year that often consists of one preparation per semester.

• A significant expectation for research leading to publications supporting the program’s CAE designation. Typically, we expect the program group to publish on average at least one paper per year in an CAE-approved journal.

• An expectation of mentoring actuarial science majors, including professional exam preparation.

• The University provides support for assisting faculty in obtaining an associate credential.

For the other position type, we envision an industry-experienced actuary who will assume the role of director of the program. Duties for this position include:

• A 2/2 teaching load per academic year that often consists of one preparation per semester.

• Continued outreach to strengthen industry ties to enhance opportunities for students in the program.

• An expectation of mentoring actuarial science majors, including professional exam preparation.

• Maintain the close existing relationship between the program and its alumni.

• Provide oversight and support for the Risk Management and Insurance Program.

• Leads curricular assessment and enhancement efforts.

• Chairs the program’s External Advisory Board.

For both positions, the Faculty Handbook stipulates that after the completion of three successful one-year contracts, the position is eligible for ongoing three-year renewals. Success is defined by satisfaction of the terms outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding created at the time of hiring.

The successful candidate will teach primarily actuarial science classes and occasionally teach mathematics and statistics courses. Typically, the Director of the Actuarial Science Program works closely with the Chair of the Department of Mathematics to address scheduling needs. Enrollment in actuarial science and upper-level statistics classes is commonly about 15-22 students and lower-level mathematics courses are capped at 28 to 30 students. The Faculty Development Center at the University of St. Thomas maintains a competitive research support program that can provide faculty members up to two course releases during their first five years on campus.

In addition to clinical faculty positions, the department is also searching for tenure-track faculty for the actuarial science program. We encourage candidates to read that position description to see which is the most appropriate fit for applying.

To be considered for this opportunity, all interested applicants must apply online at https://www.stthomas.edu/jobs/. There are multiple parts to the application process. Applicants will first be asked to create an applicant profile and upload their supplemental application materials. The committee will begin reviewing applications on Oct. 1, 2021 and will continue reviewing applications until the positions are filled.

The application process will include:

1) A curriculum vitae uploaded into you profile.
2) A cover letter copy/pasted into your application.
3) Please complete the reference section of the application with the names and contact information of three professional references. Candidates will be contacted if letters of recommendation are desired. At least one of the references should be able to address the candidate’s teaching.
4) Upload the following documents (limit each to two pages):
 a. A statement detailing your teaching experience and your teaching philosophy.
 b. A statement (in a language understandable to a broad range of math, stat. and actuarial faculty) outlining your current and future research and indicating how your research agenda will enhance our current efforts.
 c. A statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
5) Optional: additional evidence of teaching excellence.

The preferred format for all uploaded application documents is PDF.
