Our Institution and Area: Muhlenberg College is a highly-selective, undergraduate liberal arts institution of 2,200 students located in Allentown, PA, about 50 miles north of Philadelphia and 90 miles west of New York City. Allentown is a diverse city of 116,000 and anchors the third-largest metropolitan area in Pennsylvania. The greater Lehigh Valley is home to a vibrant arts scene, a unique parks system, and a rich variety of ethnic restaurants.

Expectations and Resources: The most important part of a Muhlenberg professor’s job is teaching. Our college and department value pedagogies that incorporate active learning and innovative techniques. There are numerous opportunities for professional development in teaching on campus; in particular, the Muhlenberg Center for Teaching and Learning (MCTL) offers regular programming throughout the year to support and develop faculty pedagogy. The college also supports travel to pedagogical workshops and conferences.

The teaching load for this position is 6 statistics courses per year, ranging from introductory courses to upper-level undergraduate and graduate level courses. Five of these courses would be taught as part of the Muhlenberg College undergraduate program, and one course would be taught through the Muhlenberg College School of Graduate Studies. The graduate course would provide statistics foundations or cover more advanced topics in applied analytics in support of master’s and certificate programs. An ongoing research program is also expected of tenure-track faculty. Start-up funds are available to incoming faculty for their research and grants are available to support faculty scholarship during the summer. Research with students is particularly valued and Muhlenberg offers funding to support student summer research. Funding is available to both faculty and students to travel to disciplinary conferences.

Our department and institution are very collegial. Faculty from different departments co-mingle through regular social events organized by the Amdur Faculty Club as well as MCTL events, informal gatherings for lunch at our dining commons, as well as through campus-wide committee work. Such service in committee work, both at the college and departmental level, is eventually expected of faculty members but typically not expected during their first year at the college

Application Materials: A complete application will include (1) a letter of application describing your interest in our position, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a teaching statement describing your experience and philosophy, (4) a diversity statement that describes how you will support Muhlenberg's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity in a diverse learning community, (5) a research statement that includes a list of any supervised student research projects, and (6) all graduate transcripts. Candidates who advance in the interview process will be asked for three confidential letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address teaching.

We will begin reviewing applications on Monday, November 30, 2020.
