Research Fellow: Using catastrophes, dynamics & data analysis to uncover how differentiating cells make decisions

This post is part of an exciting new project funded by EPSRC that will develop new mathematical approaches to the understanding of developmental biology in collaboration with world-leading experimental and theoretical groups. This project, which follows on from a currently productive collaboration, aims to use advanced mathematics (notably from singularity theory, dynamical systems and rare-event stochastic simulation) and the huge improvements in single cell data to provide a predictive theory that complements traditional modelling methods.

The successful candidate is likely to have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics or engineering. Experience with data analysis and/or mathematical modelling would be an advantage but is not necessary and this might be highly suitable for a pure mathematician wanting to transition to more applied research. The successful candidate will be expected to interact strongly with members of the laboratory of Dr James Briscoe FRS at the Frances Crick Institute and with the groups of Professor Eric Siggia at the Rockefeller University, New York and Dr Aryeh Warmflash (Rice).

The post is for 36 months, starting on 1 July 2021 at the latest and preferably before that. Your working environment will be in the Zeeman Institute (SBIDER) https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/zeeman_institute/ and you will be a member of the Mathematics Institute.

If you wish to discuss the post prior to application, please contact the Principal Investigator Prof. David Rand (D.A.Rand@warwick.ac.uk)

Applications via the HR website should include a CV, a list of publications, and links to a small selection of reprints/preprints or part of your PhD thesis as appropriate. All applicants should also ensure that their three referees send their references by email to Alison Glendinning, Departmental Secretary, Mathematics Institute, University of Warwick at MathematicsPA@warwick.ac.uk by the closing date.

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£30,046). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£30,942 pa).

Closing date: 11 April 2021.
