The American Mathematical Society (AMS), founded in 1888, is a non-profit membership organization that is dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through our publications, meetings and conferences, MathSciNet, professional services, advocacy, and awareness programs.  The AMS has 30,000 members worldwide and offices in Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington, DC.

The AMS invites individuals to apply for the position of Director of Programs. The Director of Programs provides leadership and direction for AMS programs, resources, events, and activities that support in-training and professional mathematicians with education and career development. This individual works with AED for Meetings & Professional Services to ascertain overall vision for programs, plans and supervises program execution with the goals of excellence and value, and ensures the promotion for these activities is effective in reaching a full spectrum of individuals with talent, experience, and interest. Promotion mediums should attract individuals who have been traditionally excluded from AMS activities. The Director of Programs supports the wider mathematics community through communications displaying the beauty of mathematics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • In collaboration with the Division Head, oversee and lead all programs and outreach activities to:
    • enhance research, scholarship, and applications in mathematics.
    • support professional development.
    • support student progress.
    • strengthen educators’ teaching.
    • assist specific training objectives.
    • facilitate the work of academic department leaders.
    • enliven the interface between academia and business, industry, and government.
  • Services supporting career/job search tools and projects
    • Manage, promote, and provide user support for the AMS job and program listing services (currently utilizing tools MathJobs.org and MathPrograms.org). 
    • Organize, in cooperation with other directors, activities at meetings and in other venues to connect mathematicians to employment opportunities.
  • Survey activities
    • Manage in-house and outsourced survey activities.
    • Work with the Director of the MPS Department and AED on strategy.
    • Liaise with the Joint Data Committee and serve as an author on select reports.
  • Outreach activities
    • Oversee creation, dissemination, and promotion of outreach content
  • Operational tasks
    • Oversee application/nomination processes programs.
    • Develop annual operating plans, budgets, long-range plans and operational policies for the Department.
    • As needed, and in conjunction with MPS Department, prepare grant proposals, oversee administration of supported programs, and author annual, final, and budget reports for funded projects.
    • Approve and report on expenses for areas of responsibility.
    • Travel to and organize activities at various AMS meeting
    • Integrate efforts that support equity, diversity, and inclusion in departmental projects, programs, and activities and report on the effectiveness of such efforts.
    • Perform additional duties as requested or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in mathematical sciences, higher education or related fields.  
  • Must possess demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with and interest in data, surveys, and inference that is pertinent to management and strategy.
  • Previous experience with program management, nonprofit management, the scientific community, or higher education is useful.
