Caltech's Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) Department announces openings for postdoctoral fellowships, starting in Fall 2023. CMS is a unique department focusing on applied mathematics, computer science, and allied fields, emphasizing the interactions between areas and the role these fields play in advancing science and engineering more broadly.

Positions are contingent upon completion of an accredited PhD program.

Applicants are encouraged to find connections with faculty research groups or interdisciplinary centers associated with CMS, such as the following.
  • Caltech's Center for the Mathematics of Information (CMI) announces openings in the CMI Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, for positions beginning in Fall 2023. The CMI is dedicated to fundamental mathematical research with an eye to the roles of information and computation throughout science and engineering. Areas of interest include algorithms, complexity, cryptography, applied combinatorics, applied probability & stochastic processes, statistics & machine learning, information & coding theory, control & dynamical systems, optimization, networked systems, autonomous systems, geometry processing, formal verification, and multiresolution methods. As an integral part of their postdoctoral training CMI postdocs may, if they would like to, teach a course with the permission of the department.

A CV, Research Statement and three reference letters are required. The research statement should contain a section that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g., mentoring activities, committee service, research, or teaching activities). A cover letter and a Teaching Statement are optional. All candidate materials are due by December 1, 2022 and letters are due by December 15, 2022.

  • The Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) Department at Caltech is seeking postdoctoral researchers in computational mathematics and applications (CMX); see: http://cmx.caltech.edu

Caltech's CMS Department is a unique environment, focusing on applied mathematics and allied fields, emphasizing fundamentals and methodology, the interactions between areas, and the role these fields play in advancing science and engineering more broadly.

We invite applications from researchers in all areas of applied mathematics and statistics including (but not limited to) mathematics of data science, numerical analysis, optimization, probability, scientific computing, signal processing, and uncertainty quantification. We also invite applications from researchers who have demonstrated strong connections between computational mathematics and applications in science and engineering. As an integral part of their postdoctoral training, postdoctoral scholars may opt to teach a course with the permission of the CMS department.

A CV; a research statement; and a statement of teaching are required. The teaching statement should contain a section that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g., mentoring activities, committee service, research, or teaching activities). Applicants must also arrange for three confidential letters of reference, one of which should address teaching. Applications will be reviewed starting November 7, 2022. All complete applications received by November 30, 2022 will be guaranteed consideration.

  • The Caltech Center for Social Information Sciences (CSIS) invites applications for the Linde Postdoctoral Fellowship in Economics and Computation.

CSIS brings together researchers from computer science, economics, engineering and mathematics in a truly interdisciplinary environment. The researchers at CSIS strive to improve the basic sciences of complex markets and social/communication networks while helping to develop our understanding of the emerging interaction between the two.  As an integral part of their postdoctoral training, postdoctoral scholars may also opt to teach a course with the permission of the department(s) in which the course is listed.

Requirements: Positions are contingent upon completion of the PhD. A CV, a Research Statement, and three reference letters are required. The Research Statement should contain a section that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g., mentoring activities, committee service, research, or teaching activities). A cover letter and a Teaching Statement are optional. Applications will be reviewed starting on November 15th. The deadline for the receipt of applicant materials is Saturday, December 10th, 2022, and reference letters must follow shortly.

NOTE: This position is also advertised on JOE (Job Openings for Economists).  Please apply on only one platform.

  • The Decision, Optimization, and Learning at the California Institute of Technology (DOLCIT) research group announces postdoctoral openings starting Fall 2023. Areas of interest are: decision theory, machine learning, optimization, statistics, and data-driven methods broadly construed.

DOLCIT brings together people from machine learning, optimization, applied math, statistics, control, robotics, and human-computer interaction to form an intellectual core pertaining fundamental and applied research in "Decision, Optimization, and Learning at the California Institute of Technology." DOLCIT envisions a world where intelligent systems seamlessly integrate learning and planning, as well as automatically balance computational and statistical tradeoffs in the underlying optimization problems. For more information, please visit: http://dolcit.cms.caltech.edu.

In addition, we have a strong interdisciplinary program at Caltech, AI4Science, that aims to develop and apply Artificial Intelligence to different scientific areas. Candidates with an interest in participating can specify it in their application.

As an integral part of their postdoctoral training, postdoctoral scholars may also opt to teach a course with the permission of the CMS department.

A CV, a Research Statement, and three reference letters (up to a maximum of five) are required. The Research Statement should contain a section that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g., mentoring activities, committee service, research, or teaching activities).  A cover letter and a Teaching Statement are optional. Applications will be reviewed starting January 1, 2023.

  • The von Kármán Postdoctoral Instructorship is open to candidates showing exceptional promise in research and teaching, and we invite applications from researchers in all areas of applied and computational mathematics including (but not limited to) mathematics of data science, statistics, machine learning, numerical analysis, PDE analysis, optimization, probability, scientific computing, signal processing, and uncertainty quantification. We also invite applications from researchers who have demonstrated strong connections between computational mathematics and applications in science and engineering. The instructorship is offered as a two-year position with the possibility of a one-year extension.  Candidates are expected to contribute to teaching in the department, including working with a diverse student body, while pursuing research. The teaching requirement typically consists of 2 one-quarter classes per year on mutually agreed topics to balance departmental needs and research interests of the candidate.

Application materials must include a current CV, three confidential letters of reference (one of which should address teaching), a research statement (putting past accomplishments into perspective and indicating future directions as they pertain to opportunities at Caltech), and a teaching statement (current applied mathematics courses the applicant would be interested in teaching, or new courses that the applicant would like to offer). The teaching statement should also address teaching experience and training as a teacher as well as past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion (e.g., mentoring activities, committee service, research, or teaching activities). All complete applications received by November 15, 2022 will be guaranteed consideration.
