Fellowship Description
The Department of Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) invites applications for the Sherman Fairchild and Scott Russell Johnson Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics, beginning September 2027.
Sherman Fairchild/Scott Russell Johnson Teaching Fellowships in Mathematics will be offered to candidates within six years of having received their PhD who show strong research promise, preferably in one of the areas in which the Caltech Mathematics Faculty is currently active. Initial appointments are normally for three years with a possible extension. Appointees will be expected to fulfill teaching duties (two one-quarter courses per academic year), pursue their own research program, and be in residence even when not teaching. Summer can be used for one-month vacation, research and other scholarly activities. These positions will be offered if funds are available.
Qualifications and terms of appointment:
- PhD in Mathematics or related field (completed or expected by the fellowship start date)
- Eligibility extends to current postdoctoral scholars
- Appointment term: 3 years, with possible extension subject to satisfactory performance
- Salary: $88,000 in the first year
- Research fund: $9,000 per annum
- One-time allowance to assist with the move
- Annual vacations: 21 days, not including Caltech Holidays
- Annual sick leave: 15 days
