Assistant College Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics (Discrete Mathematics) 

Position Description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cleveland State University has an opening for an Assistant College Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics (Discrete Mathematics). The starting date of the appointment is August 21, 2023. This is a renewable, non-tenure-track position. 

The successful applicant is expected to teach Discrete Mathematics and first- and second-year mathematics and statistics courses. The successful applicant will also be responsible for providing support to graduate students enrolled via the CSU Global initiative in the Master of Computer and Information Science program. This is a large group of students, coming from diverse international backgrounds, that need to take undergraduate courses before they can proceed to graduate-level work. These students require support above and beyond what is expected for other students in the department. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in department, college, and university service.

The Assistant College Lecturer hired for this position will have the following duties: 

 • Teach discrete mathematics for the students in the CSU Global program. 
 • Teach other mathematics and statistics courses at the 100- and 200- level, as needed by the department. 
 • Interact with Computer Science, CSU Global and other constituencies regarding the programmatic needs regarding the teaching of discrete mathematics for these students. 
 • Develop strategies for success of these students, including monitoring and encouraging attendance and participation. 
 • Coordinate supplemental instruction (SI) for these students. These duties include recruiting supplemental instruction leaders, scheduling, and organizing SI sessions, and providing materials for and monitoring of supplemental instruction sessions. 

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in a mathematical science (such as mathematics, statistics, math education, or a related field) and at least 4 years of experience teaching mathematics or statistics courses OR Ph.D. in a mathematical science and at least 2 years of experience teaching mathematics or statistics courses. Strong communication skills. 

Preferred Qualifications: 
• Ph.D. in a mathematical science (such as mathematics, statistics, math education, or a related field). 
• Extensive experience teaching college-level mathematics including discrete mathematics and other mathematics and statistics courses. 
• Extensive documented experience working with students with diverse international backgrounds. 
• Recruiting and hiring supplemental instruction leaders and developing materials for supplemental instruction and/or experience supervising/coordinating a student success program involving the training of students to take leadership roles in peer-to-peer instructional activities. 
• Experience coordinating multi-sectioned courses, designing course components, and making common exams and syllabi. 
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring students, and enhancing student engagement and success. 
• Demonstrated professional development such as participating in workshops on teaching mathematics. 
• Demonstrated service contributions in an academic environment. 
• Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills. 
• The ability to contribute through teaching, and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Hire is contingent upon the maintenance of existing levels of funding from the State of Ohio.
