The Department of Mathematical Engineering is part of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile, which houses the leading Engineering School in Chile. Its main focus is scientific research in the field of pure and applied mathematics, as well as undergraduate and graduate teaching. The main areas of fundamental research are: nonlinear partial differential equations, discrete mathematics, mathematical mechanics and inverse problems, optimization and equilibrium, probability and ergodic theory. A significant number of members of the Department are also involved in national and international projects related to applications of mathematics in science, industry and public policy, through the Center for Mathematical Modeling of the same Faculty (www.cmm.uchile.cl).
