Postdoctoral Fellowship in Quantitative Biology

The Department of Mathematics at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time residential postdoctoral appointment with start date July 1, 2026, although earlier start dates are possible. The postdoctoral fellow will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Ethan Levien (Mathematics) and Associate Professor Daniel Schultz (Microbiology and Immunology, Geisel School of Medicine). This NSF-funded position focuses on understanding the phenotypic diversity that emerges within bacterial populations responding to antibiotics. The project will investigate how complex interactions of the drug with the cell's physiology results in non-genetic variation in single-cell growth and gene expression, leading to the emergence of unexpected phenotypes. Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, statistics, quantitative biology, physics, or a closely related field before the start date. Strong applicants will have a solid background in stochastic processes and mathematical/theoretical biology. The project will involve both theoretical and experimental components. Although no laboratory work is required, the project involves the analysis of experimental data. The post-doctoral appointee may have the opportunity to teach one or two ten-week courses, contingent on course availability in the Mathematics Department and teaching qualifications. Salary will be adjusted accordingly and set by the Associate Dean for Sciences.
