Position Description
Florida International University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This is a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. We welcome tenured applicants, with particular interest in full professors. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic, forward-thinking leader to guide a large and complex department through a period of transition toward renewed excellence in research, teaching, and collegial governance.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at FIU is home to a group of about 80 faculty engaged in research and teaching across pure and applied mathematics, statistics, mathematics education research, and interdisciplinary fields. The department has long-standing master’s programs and a growing doctoral program, and at the same time serves thousands of undergraduates annually who take mathematics and statistics courses as part of their general education requirements. As such, the department has a significant service-teaching mission that spans STEM and non-STEM disciplines and is integral to the student success outcomes of the college and university.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership for and administrative oversight of the department’s research, teaching, and service missions, while developing a strategic vision in alignment with FIU’s mission, the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, and University priorities.
- Advocate for the department within the university and externally, including with funding agencies and professional associations.
- Support faculty in advancing their research, teaching, and service while mentoring junior colleagues.
- Steward departmental resources and pursue opportunities for growth and innovation.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration with emerging areas such as mathematical data science, applied mathematics, computational statistics, machine learning, and AI.
- Oversee and encourage curricular innovation in undergraduate and graduate programs including FIU’s newer offerings such as the Mathematical Data Science major while ensuring rigorous standards and effective pedagogy. Cultivate a supportive and collegial departmental climate that supports faculty, staff, and students.
- Build consensus across different perspectives while promoting transparent communication and effective governance.
Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
- An outstanding record of scholarly achievement and teaching that merits appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure.
- Demonstrated experience in academic leadership, with evidence of successfully addressing complex organizational challenges.
- Strong communication and consensus-building skills.
- Capacity to lead a department through cultural and organizational change.
The Ideal Candidate:
We seek a leader who embraces challenges as opportunities, who listens as carefully as they act, and who can inspire confidence while guiding the department into a new era of collaboration and achievement.
Application Instructions:
Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply to Job Opening ID 536444 at https://careers.fiu.edu and attach a cover letter addressing leadership philosophy and relevant experience, statements of research and teaching philosophy, and a curriculum vitae. Candidates will be requested to provide names and contact information for at least 3 references who will be contacted as determined by the Search Committee. To receive full consideration, applications and required materials should be received by January 16, 2026. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
