Applications are invited for the position of Sumners Professor of Mathematics at Florida State University,
with a start date of August 2026.
The Sumners Professorship is an endowed chair named after Emeritus Professor of Mathematics De Witt
Sumners, who pioneered applications of Knot Theory to Biology.
The search is for an open rank position in all fields of Mathematics. Candidates should have a doctoral degree
in Mathematics or a related discipline and must have a demonstrated record of exceptional achievements in
research, teaching, mentoring and leadership.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in one or
several research areas that complement the existing research focus of the mathematics department.
The Mathematics Department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in pure, and several branches of of applied
mathematics. Currently, there are 40 faculty members, 9 postdoctoral scholars, and over a hundred graduate
students specializing in pure, applied and computational mathematics, financial mathematics, biomathematics,
and data science. There is a significant interaction among faculty members, postdocs, and students in all
these areas of mathematics, as well as with other units within FSU.

university enrolls over 40,000 students on its main campus in Tallahassee, located in North Florida, with a
population of approximately 210,000 residents. Tallahassee is adjacent to the Apalachicola National Forest
and is about twenty-five miles from the Gulf of Mexico, providing easy access to pristine beaches and other
natural habitats. The city enjoys a warm climate, with an annual average high temperature of 80 degrees
Fahrenheit and an annual average low temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit.
