The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) at Brown University invites applications for the position of Deputy Director, beginning as early as July 1, 2025. 

ICERM is located in Providence, RI and was established in 2010 through a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to Brown University. ICERM scientific programs are overseen by the Director and Deputy Director, assisted by several Associate Directors charged with specific projects or responsibilities, and advised by three external committees: the Board of Trustees, Education Advisory Board, and Scientific Advisory Board.

The Deputy Director will have a full-time Senior Research Scientist or Distinguished Senior Research Scientist faculty appointment at Brown and will be in residence for the full year. The initial appointment will be for a term of five years with an expectation of renewal subject to continuing funding from the NSF. The Deputy Director will contribute to both scientific discussions of programs and the administration of the institute.

The candidate should have a PhD and significant record of research in the mathematical sciences or related fields; prior experience with scientific conferences and collaborative research environments; and a broad perspective on the mathematical sciences and related fields. Preference will be given to applicants with exposure to funded research as a faculty member, program officer, or academic administrator.

Areas of responsibility include:

• Oversee the scientific aspects of semester programs at ICERM, including planning and preparation for the program, coordination with organizers and participants during the program, and allocation of resources.

• Oversee short-term institute activities: topical workshops, Hot Topics workshops, summer undergraduate research programs (Summer@ICERM), early career programs, small group research (Collaborate@ICERM), and outreach events.

• Maintain an independent scholarly program, devoting 20% time to personal research in the mathematical sciences.

• Manage day-to-day interactions with ICERM’s external boards and funders, including the implementation of policy guidance, project reporting, the evaluation of scientific programs, and travel to meetings of institute leaders.

• Advise the Director and ICERM’s professional staff on administrative questions touching on ICERM’s scientific activities, and work with Brown administrative offices on issues affecting the institute.

• Assist the Director in the solicitation and development of programs and workshops, and with grant proposals to support existing and new programs and initiatives.

The Deputy Director will work closely with ICERM’s staff and report to the Director. Reappointments and promotions will be evaluated by a committee of faculty members affiliated with the institute.
