Position Description

The Center for Computing Sciences (CCS) seeks new research staff members in Physical Sciences to join our team. We are a collaborative research institution looking to add self-motivated colleagues who like working on hard problems that are theoretical as well as practical and have an impact on the vital communications that protect national security. Their solutions often come from interdisciplinary collaboration, drawing on knowledge from mathematics, computer science, data science, and engineering.

We support transparency, equity, and fairness in our compensation program and provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range based on data-driven market analysis for each position. While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $112,924-$274,746.  Individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors.

CCS and its sister institutions, the Centers for Communications Research in La Jolla and Princeton, form the Center for Communications and Computing, a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) that is a division of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA).

Rather than recruiting in specific sub-field, we are looking for creative scientists who will help build on the specialized body of knowledge that has been developed in-house. Some projects require deep and sophisticated mathematics, others the latest computational and engineering technologies, and many require both. In addition to internal work, we encourage continued academic research, and we support travel to workshops and conferences. Because our staff are expected to manage their own research program, most successful applicants have a Ph.D., but exceptional applicants with other degrees and experience will be considered.

We have a shared-credit environment and a flat organizational structure. Collaboration is encouraged by an "open door" policy, informal conversations at daily tea, regular seminars, and easy access to spontaneous discussion sessions. The result is small, flexible working groups. We also hold ten-week SCAMPs (Summer Conference on Applied Mathematical Problems) each summer, which bring in graduate students and faculty from academic institutions for collaborative work on focused problems.

U.S. citizenship is required. Employment is contingent on obtaining an appropriate security clearance (which we will sponsor). The start date for this position is flexible.

Interested individuals should apply via www.MathJobs.org. Please submit an AMS cover sheet; a cover letter; CV; a research statement; and three letters of recommendation from people who can speak knowledgeably about your research and/or problem solving abilities. For further information, please contact Jenny Kelley, Director, at: jenny@super.org.

CCS offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits, including moving expenses, medical and dental insurance, 403(b), HSA, FSA, life and disability insurance, and an on-site gym. CCS encourages employees to maintain a successful work-leisure balance. There are several policies in place to ensure employees can take leave and pursue other options when necessary in order to take care of family needs.

IDA is an equal opportunity employer committed to providing a working environment that is free from discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, status as a protected veteran, marital status, genetic characteristic or any other legally protected condition or characteristic.
