The College of Science and Engineering at Idaho State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with an anticipated start date of August 2027.This position is a joint appointment between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Computer Science, with the tenure home in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting high-quality, peer-reviewed research, and contributing to the development of the artificial intelligence curriculum in areas aligned with their expertise. The candidate is also expected to establish a collaborative and interdisciplinary research program that enhances and complements the research activities of faculty across the College of Science and Engineering. Both departments jointly offer a newly approved Bachelor's in Artificial Intelligence Sciences degree, starting Fall 2026. Additionally, both departments participate in a college-wide PhD in Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a Bachelor's, Minor and a Bachelor's degree and Minor in Statistics; a Minor in Applied Mathematics; an Undergraduate Certificate in Actuarial Science; and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics. The department provides courses in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics that serve students in many fields, including engineering, education, health professions, business, and the sciences. A small student-to-faculty ratio affords close interaction with students. We also maintain a highly trained and research-active faculty with a balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service, which conducts research in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education.  The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is currently home to 12 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 11 full-time instructional faculty, and several adjunct instructors.

The Department of Computer Science offers a Master's, Bachelor's, and Minor in Computer Science, a Bachelor’s in Software Engineering, a Graduate Certificate in Secure Cyber Operations, and an Undergraduate Certificate in Computer Science Cybersecurity. The department maintains a balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service. The Department of Computer Science is home to 5 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 2 full-time instructional faculty, and several adjunct instructors.

The key responsibilities of this position are to teach introductory and advanced level artificial intelligence courses, conduct interdisciplinary research, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and provide service to the department, the college, the university, the community, and the profession. 

Minimum Qualification 

A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related field must be completed prior to the start date of the appointment. This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience or potential in teaching STEM courses and advanced AI courses

• Experience or potential to contribute to the development of an AI curriculum

• Demonstrated interest and experience in effectively teaching and mentoring students with a variety of needs

• Demonstrated potential to establish a strong publication record and maintain a productive research program

• Evidence of the potential and interest in collaborative research

• Experience or potential to obtain external funding

• Demonstrated commitment to service and outreach

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Expertise that complements the strengths of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Department of Computer Science
