The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit candidates for the positions of

1-2 ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS (TENURE TRACK) IN MATHEMATICS

The positions start on August 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of an assistant professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate/full professor).

Qualifications we are looking for

Responsibilities of assistant/associate professors include research and teaching related to their research area. The person appointed to the position is expected to carry out internationally high-level research in Mathematics. We are looking for candidates that have shown internationally strong research potential and experience in a field of Mathematics that supports the scientific profile of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We especially value merits in the research fields of (geometric) analysis and/or stochastics

The teaching responsibilities of assistant/associate professors include lectures and other courses of mathematics ranging from basic courses to postgraduate ones. The tasks include advising students and supervising theses at the bachelor, master, and postgraduate levels.

Additionally, assistant/associate professors are involved in the societal interaction as experts. The assistant/associate professor participates in managerial research and administrative tasks, continuous development of education, acquisition of research funding, and demanding specialist tasks. 

Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching. Please see the general requirements for appointing an assistant professor or associate professor (tenure track). The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world-class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for various jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis and geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry, the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics, the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications, e.g., in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics, the research areas are computational statistics, causal models, design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry, and environmental statistics. The department is a member of the networks of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems, and the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures.
