The focus of this professorship is the development of new mathematical methods for the quantification of uncertainties by combining computational models and data. The successful candidate should have a scientific background in at least one of the following topics: • Numerical methods for partial differential equations with uncertain parameters or stochastic terms • Monte Carlo, stochastic collocation or Galerkin methods as well as model reduction techniqoes for high-dimensional problems • Bayesian methods for inverse problems This professorship ideally complements the existing research in partial differential equations at the KIT Faculty of Mathematics and builds a bridge to the KIT Center MathSEE (Mathematics in Sciences, Engineering and Economics). Experience with interdisciplinary collaborations with the sciences, engineering, and economics is strongly desired.

The professorship is integrated in the Helmholtz Research Field Information, specifically in Program 1 "Engineering Digital Futures”. The professorship will work closely with the Simulation and Data Labs (SDLs) in Topic 1 "Enabling Computational & Data-Intensive Science and Engineering". One of the goals of the program is the sustainable development of scientific software, so software products will also be recognized as scientific achievements. By joining the recently approved pilot project Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) within the Incubator Information & Data Science, the activities will have an impact on the entire Helmholtz Association.

The professorship contributes to an appropriate extent to the teaching of the KIT Department of Mathematics both for the German-language mandatory courses as well as in the elective area. This requires the willingness to learn the German language if necessary. The professorship is associated with a teaching obligation of 6 hours after positive evaluation and 4 hours up to then. You will actively shape your research at KIT and your own further development and will independently supervise doctoral candidates and students. In doing so, you will combine a cooperative working method with strong communication skills.

A university degree, pedagogical aptitude and special aptitude for scientific work are required, as well as a completed doctorate, which should not be longer than four years ago at the time of the advertisement. Employment conditions as outlined in § 51 LHG (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges) in conjunction with § 20 KITG (KIT-Act) in the version applicable until the legal validity of the 2. KIT-Weiterentwicklungsgesetz (2nd KIT Further Development Act) shall apply as well as the Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships and Tenure-Track Professorships at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In addition, the evaluation pays special attention to the commitment to the Helmholtz program. An accompanying procedure at KIT is offered for a predictable scientific career development.

Employment will initially be for a period of six years as a temporary civil servant or as an employee (according to “Beurlaubungsmodell” §15 (2) KITG). An interim evaluation is carried out in the fourth year of service. If the final tenure evaluation is positive, the successful candidate will be promoted to the rank of tenured full professor (W3).

KIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Recognized severely disabled persons will be preferred if they are equally qualified. KIT is a certified family-friendly university and offers part-time employment, leave of absence due to family reasons, dual-career service and coaching to support the compatibility of work and family life.

The processing of personal data by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is carried out according to the Privacy Policy.
