The Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Institute at Leiden University, The Netherlands, are looking for Assistant Professors in Statistics (Tenure Track)


The Mathematical Institute at Leiden University has positions for assistant professor TT in statistics. 


Key Responsibilities

The holder of the post is expected to:

  • develop own identity as a researcher;
  • acquire national or European research grants to support the own research line;
  • be actively involved in teaching and contribute to the development of our curriculum;
  • (co-)supervise students from master in Mathematics and in Statistics and PhD students.

Selection Criteria 

Successful candidates are expected to:

  • hold a PhD in Mathematics or Statistics
  • have a track record (evidenced by publications in highly ranked journals), in the subjects of:
    - statistical research, or
    - machine learning, as long as the research is primarily mathematical in nature; 
  • have good communication skills and experience in teaching;
  • have a good command of the English language. 

Additional Requirements to fulfill after hiring

  • Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). Newly hired staff, not already holding this qualification or equivalent, are required to obtain within two years;
  • Newly hired staff not already holding a Dutch language proficiency diploma at level B2 or higher, are required to obtain such diploma within two years.

MI tenure track

A Tenure Track position at MI is a temporary appointment as assistant professor, for a period of six years.  MI’s Tenure Track is expected to lead to a tenured position as associate professor, from which one can grow into the role of a full professor. MI’s Tenure Track is a clear career path to foster the development of young academics personal and professional talent.

Employment conditions

The gross monthly salary of an assistant professor at MI is between € 3.807,- and € 5.922,- depending on the experience demonstrated at hiring. 
An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and other benefits; these include an annual holiday premium of 8%, an end-of-year premium of 8.3% and a paid parental leave of 62,5%. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
