Position Description
The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Research Associate (postdoc position) in algebraic number theory. This post is funded by an EPSRC Grant `Sharifi conjecture for Bianchi 3-manifolds’ held by Dr Tobias Berger and is fixed term for 36 months. The project is developing new tools in the deformation theory of residually reducible Galois representations and studying the cohomology of Bianchi 3-folds using algebraic K-theory in order to prove Sharifi’s conjecture, one of the key open problems in the Langlands programme. Working alongside 6 academic staff in algebraic number theory specializing in the Langlands programme will provide you with a stimulating environment to develop a successful research career. Funds will be available for professional development, such as conference participations and research visits. You should have a PhD in a relevant area of pure mathematics (or equivalent experience). We are looking for someone with a strong background in algebraic number theory or arithmetic algebraic geometry, with expertise to include some of the following: Cohomology of arithmetic groups, algebraic K-theory, and deformations of Galois representations. The deadline for applications is 30 June. The post is expected to start by 1 October 2026.We are not accepting applications for this job through MathJobs.Org right now.
