Northern Illinois University invites applications for the position of the Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. This is a full-time tenured position to begin July 1, 2023. We seek a chair that is a strong communicator and will provide strategic, academic, administrative, and visionary leadership to distinguish the department in its research, teaching and service missions. The successful candidate will (1) have an interest in transforming undergraduate programs to better serve students of diverse backgrounds; (2) build connections with other disciplines, departments, and institutions to strongly enhance the general education mission of the department; (3) have the vision and proven leadership abilities to advance the department within an R2 designated university; (4) have a demonstrated commitment to research; and (5) have an outstanding record of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Job Responsibilities In addition to research and teaching obligations, the chair is the spokesperson of the department in all official transactions with department members, as well as with other units of the university, and is responsible for the proper functioning of the department as an instructional, research/artistic, and public-service unit. The duties of this position include: supervising all office staff; being responsible for the department budget and finances; chairing the department advisory committee and personnel committee; being the primary representative of the department for external relationships; overseeing the completion of department reports, evaluations, accreditation reviews, and external requests for information; updating and implementing the department’s strategic plans on an annual basis; and chairing meetings of the faculty. Minimum Required Qualifications • A PhD or equivalent in Mathematical Sciences; • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research commensurate with rank of associate or full professor.

Additional Requirements • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; • Ability to direct, support, and enhance the many missions of the department including its academic programs at all levels from general education courses to its doctoral program.

Preferred Qualifications • Holding the rank of Full Professor or having the qualifications to be promoted to Full Professor at the time of appointment; • Outstanding academic, administrative and leadership experience; • Extensive experience in teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds; • A track record of external funding; • Research specialization that complements departmental strengths.
