Position Description

The Rutgers Mathematics Department offers various postdoctoral positions in Mathematics. These include several Hill or Triennial Assistant Professorships, which are three-year non-tenure track, non-renewable, Post-Doctoral Research instructorships. Subject to availability of funding, the Department expects to have five of these positions that will start in Fall of 2026. Hill Assistant Professorships carry a teaching load of three single-semester courses per year, while Triennial Assistant Professorships carry a teaching load of four single-semester courses per year. Candidates should have received a Ph.D. by the time the position starts, and show outstanding promise of research ability in pure or applied mathematics as well as a capacity for effective teaching.

In addition, various postdoctoral research positions may become available, which may or may not carry teaching responsibilities.

To apply, applicants must complete BOTH the basic employment application at Rutgers ROCS site https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/261016 as well as this application on mathjobs.org. The application to the Rutgers job site requires fewer documents than is required for the mathjobs application; in particular recommendation letters should only be submitted to the mathjobs site.

For the mathjobs application: the AMS Cover Sheet must be filled out completely. Make sure that you include the AMS Subject Classification number of your area(s) of specialization (2-digit codes). Applicants should submit:

  • a curriculum vitae (including a publication list)
  • a research statement (of up to about 5 pages)
  • a teaching statement.
Arrange for four letters of reference to be submitted, including one which primarily evaluates teaching. If possible, the teaching letter should reference quantitative results of teaching evaluations.

Review of applications begins December 1, 2025 and continues until any potential openings are filled.

All job offers are contingent upon successful pre-employment background screening prior to commencement of employment.  The academic year salary for a postdoctoral fellow will not be less than $63,968 based on the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the faculty union (AAUP-AFT) and Rutgers University.
