Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island’s scenic North Shore. Our 1,000-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Suffolk County’s only academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world-class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities. Many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments with BNL or Medical school departments.

Stony Brook University’s Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, founded in 2009, is an endowed research center devoted to furthering fundamental knowledge in geometry and theoretical physics, especially knowledge at the interface of these two disciplines. The Mathematics Department, was founded in 1958 and in recent years has been consistently ranked among the top twenty-five departments in the country. Particular strengths include differential and symplectic geometry, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, dynamics, complex analysis, and their applications to mathematical physics. The Institute for Mathematical Sciences, founded in 1989, is closely allied to the Mathematics department. Its current primary research focus is on dynamical systems with an emphasis on the low-dimensional real and complex cases.

The SCGP and Mathematics have two joint-positions for Postdoctoral Fellows available with a starting date of September 1, 2017. These are three-year term appointments with an academic year salary of $65,000 and a $10,000 summer stipend, there is also an annual supplement of $5,000 in the first year, $3,000 each subsequent year for scientific travel, inviting visitors and other research related expenses. We seek candidates with an outstanding research potential in the field of geometry. Postdoctoral Fellows will teach one course per academic year in the Department of Mathematics in addition to performing individual and collaborative research. Preference will be given to candidates who have held a Ph.D. at most two years.

Applications should be received before 11:59 pm EST on December 31, 2016.

To apply, applicants should complete the American Mathematical Society’s application process online at The application process consists of: 1) Research Foundation Employment Application, downloadable at:; 2)AMS standard cover sheet, 3) cover letter, 4) CV, 5) publication list, 6) research statement, and 7) three reference letters.
