The Opportunity

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University invites applications for two full-time positions as Lecturer to commence September 1, 2021. The Department is recognized for its research in statistical modeling and mathematical statistics, and their applications and the breadth and quality of the statistics training it provides to the University community. The Department engages 24 research-active faculty members who study and apply modern statistical and data sciences and actuarial science research and 2 teaching faculty who provide innovative, effective instruction in modern statistics and actuarial science. The Department is committed to the establishment of an equitable, diverse and inclusive operating environment and diversification of its faculty community as a critically important ingredient for pursuing its educational, research, and service missions.

Qualified candidates will have an active interest and demonstrated effectiveness in teaching undergraduate Statistics and enthusiasm for pedagogical innovations and curriculum development including development of innovative course materials. The record of qualified candidates will demonstrate:

  • A PhD in Statistical Sciences at the time of appointment;
  • Mastery of undergraduate and masters level statistics;
  • Instructional experience at the university level;
  • Competency with instructional technology and statistical computing packages including R;
  • Commitment to the development of pedagogical approaches and course materials that increase inclusion and success for students from diverse backgrounds, including those from Canada’s most marginalized communities;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Ability to navigate a multi-tasking environment;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and commitment to respectful interactions with students, faculty and staff;
  • Ability to mentor and advise undergraduate students in statistical sciences studies and graduate student teaching assistants in instructional duties.
