DESCRIPTION

Two 2026-27 postdoctoral fellowships may be granted in the areas of expertise of the Director and Deputy Director.  

All applications will be reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), and the Program Organizers, who recommend finalists to the SAC for approval at its January meeting.

The fellowship stipend is currently $7,400 per month for five months, with a travel subsidy for one round-trip from your current institution to the Bay Area, and research travel funds. Health, dental and vision insurance is also provided. In addition, SLMath awards some endowed fellowships. There is no need to apply separately for these endowed positions.  

ELIGIBILITY

  • Fellows must hold a PhD at the beginning of the program.
  • The PhD must have been awarded on or after August 31, 2022.
  • Fellows must be in residence for the duration of the program (no exception possible).
  • Fellows cannot receive any other monetary compensation during their fellowship at SLMath.

    • Deadline: Applications must be complete, including three letters of reference, by November 1, 2025

    NSF POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

    Early-career researchers who will be in their second or third year of an NSF postdoctoral fellowship at the time of the SLMath program are not eligible to apply for an SLMath postdoctoral fellowship. Such researchers are welcome to apply for regular research memberships, specifying that they are an NSF postdoctoral fellow.

    If an NSF fellow is offered an SLMath research membership, they should contact the NSF officer to ask permission to visit SLMath.

    SIMULTANEOUS NSF POSTDOC APPLICANT

    For early-career researchers who are simultaneously applying for a postdoctoral fellowship at the NSF and at SLMath, the following rules apply:

    • The NSF encourages applications to list SLMath as a possible site for research in their applications.
    • If an applicant receives both an SLMath and NSF postdoctoral offer:
      • The applicant should contact their NSF officer and request permission to attend the semester-long SLMath program (the NSF requires a letter from the mentor agreeing to the SLMath visit).
      • If the NSF approves the request, the SLMath postdoctoral fellowship will default to a regular research membership (which means no stipend from SLMath but rather reimbursement of local expenses).

    IMPORTANT NOTE ON VISA STATUS

    Please make sure to check visa instructions before proceeding with your application. 

    If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, your visa status may severely limit or even eliminate the possibility of SLMath providing compensation or reimbursement for your expenses, as well as restricting the length of time that you can visit SLMath. You should therefore carefully indicate your visa status on your MathJobs application and investigate its requirements.

    If you presently hold an H1-B visa at another institution you are not eligible for a postdoctoral fellowship at SLMath.  Instead, please apply for a Research Membership.  

    If you will be on F-1 STEM OPT in another institution at the time of your visit to SLMath, you are not eligible to apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. If you are on another type of  F-1 visa, please contact the International Scholar Office at the institution sponsoring your F-1 visa to confirm that you are allowed to visit SLMath.
