Position Description

Department Chair Jie Qing in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Developmental Math and Placement Coordinator.

The UCSC Department of Mathematics is a dynamic community of faculty, researchers, and educators dedicated to advancing mathematical knowledge and supporting student success across disciplines including engineering, social sciences, and the natural sciences. As part of a public research university, the department is committed to excellence in teaching, innovation in curriculum, and broadening access to mathematics education.

The Developmental Math and Placement Coordinator will play a central role in coordinating and supporting the department’s mathematics placement processes and developmental mathematics program. This includes serving as the primary point of contact for math placement, working collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure effective placement of students into appropriate courses, and evaluating and improving placement practices through data-informed analysis. The coordinator will also support the alignment and continuous improvement of developmental mathematics curriculum (e.g., algebra and precalculus), track student outcomes, and contribute to ongoing assessment efforts.

In addition, the coordinator will support instructional excellence by helping to train and support teaching assistants, undergraduate learning assistants, and instructors involved in developmental mathematics courses. The position may include occasional teaching opportunities through a concurrent lecturer appointment consistent with campus recruitment policies. The role requires strong organizational, analytical, and leadership skills, as well as experience in postsecondary mathematics instruction.

Applicants with any of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: experience training teaching assistants or leading instructional teams; familiarity with mathematics placement systems (e.g., ALEKS PPL, MDTP, COMPASS); experience with data analysis tools such as Python, R, or SPSS; and demonstrated ability to use data to inform curricular or programmatic improvements; and/or experience working with learning management systems.
