University of Illinois at Chicago

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science

Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applicants for a joint Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate in mathematics education and learning sciences beginning August 16, 2023. This position is held jointly between the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science and the Learning Sciences Research Institute.

Bridge to Faculty is a recruitment program designed to attract postdoctoral scholars who are underrepresented in their fields or departments, with the goal of a direct transition to a tenure-track junior faculty position after two years. This recruitment initiative aims to attract and retain promising scholars to UIC as well as diversify our faculty.

We seek applicants with a record of research and publication at the nexus of research in mathematics education and the learning sciences (LS). Candidates must either (a) hold a doctorate in mathematics, mathematics education (or a closely related field) or (b) hold a doctorate in the learning sciences (or a closely related field) and at least a master’s degree in mathematics or the equivalent. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated record of research and scholarship focused on equitable teaching or learning in undergraduate mathematics, issues of race and power in undergraduate mathematics, and the design of equitable learning environments in mathematics.

This position carries a teaching responsibility of one course per year, and the expectation that the candidate plays a significant role in the research life of both units. Successful applicants must have a demonstrated record of or show potential for research in mathematics education and learning sciences, or related field(s). The Ph.D. must be from 2019 or after to be considered.

This position offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration in research, teaching and design, given UIC’s LS focus on “Learning in the Disciplines,” in which LS faculty hold positions in both LS and a disciplinary department. The UIC Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science has active research programs, and undergraduate and graduate degrees, in a broad spectrum of centrally important areas of pure mathematics, computational and applied mathematics, combinatorics, mathematical computer science and scientific computing, probability and statistics, and mathematics education (https://mscs.uic.edu/). The Department also offers several mathematics education degree programs that lead to a teaching credential. The Learning Sciences Research Institute (https://lsri.uic.edu/) is a unit dedicated to the support of multidisciplinary research on learning and teaching in formal and informal contexts, and to the design, development and evaluation of innovative learning environments and educational practices. The institute is home to a Ph.D. graduate program in learning sciences and encompasses 100+ members including faculty, staff and Learning Sciences doctoral students representing multiple disciplines.

The postdoc position is a non-tenure-track position, renewable annually for a maximum of two years subject to satisfactory performance and University approval. Additionally, successful postdocs may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2025-2026 academic year. This recruitment initiative aims to attract and retain promising scholars to UIC as well as diversify our faculty. Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse student and community populations.

Applicants should provide research, teaching, and diversity statements, a vita, and at least three (3) letters of recommendation including one that addresses teaching. Applicants should address their prior activities, experience, or background that will contribute to the diversity of the campus community in their diversity statement. Applications should be submitted through mathjobs.org. No applications will be accepted by surface mail or e-mail. To ensure full consideration, application materials must be received by December 16, 2022, but applications will be accepted through January 16, 2023.
