The University of Richmond Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for the position of Director of Mathematics with responsibilities for calculus courses, training, and education, beginning August 2024. This is a non-tenure-track continuing position. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in mathematics or similar field prior to the start date and experience in undergraduate teaching.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, including knowledge of pedagogical trends and practices for sustaining an innovative program in mathematics. The director is expected to teach a total of seven courses each academic year (some multiple sections), focusing primarily on the calculus sequence, including our SMART calculus course. The director will also ensure consistency in core content across all sections of calculus, as well as maintain an awareness of changes in curriculum as needed. In addition, the director will help the department recruit, hire, and prepare contingent faculty members who will teach in the calculus sequence. The director will contribute to our non-calculus general education course offerings for non-STEM majors. There may be opportunities to develop and teach upper-level courses in the director's specialty, and/or mentor student research. In addition to teaching-related duties, academic advising and service on department and/or university committees is expected. The mathematics and statistics department offers a vibrant program that equips students with theoretical and computational skills for success in many areas of employment, graduate school, and other post-graduation opportunities. The department aims to make mathematics accessible to all students and seeks colleagues who share these goals of broadening access to STEM disciplines in general, and mathematics in particular. The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and a wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With approximately 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students “to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.” The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community that values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success.
